refurbishment and remodeling of an existing house.
the client purchased this traditionally constructed mid 19th century property because of its beautiful mature garden. her aspiration was to turn this dated house with its many small rooms into a simple, spacious home where the interior lowed into the garden and where sunlight lit the rooms from different angles throughout the day.
walls were removed to create more generous spaces and simpler circulation through the interior.
existing features were selectively retained or removed: the stone stair with its cast iron balustrade and french polished handrail was carefully restored; whilst the bay window between the sitting room and the garden was removed.
the result is a modern, uncluttered aesthetic which also retains some of the texture, detail and richness of the old.
